Infectious diseases kill 50.000 people a day and infections remain a major challenge for researchers of all countries for the coming century. For decades most immunologists ignored innate immunity and concentrated their efforts on dissecting the adaptive immune system. However, over the last decade innate immunity has slowly but surely gained in stature and is now recognised as a major force in our fight against infection and disease. Through a limited number of players innate immunity performs a remarkable range of functions assisting the mammalian host to survive in an abundant microbial world. Conversely, disruption of host innate immunity is now known to play a central role in the pathogenesis of a variety of acute and chronic inflammatory conditions.
The aim of this course is to provide within two weeks the latest knowledge in the innate immune responses to microbes. It will combine lectures with “hands on” laboratory exercises, and the discussion of seminal papers in the field.
The course will be dictated by a group of Uruguayan and Pasteurians actively involved in the study of infectious diseases and with a focus of research interest in innate immune response to pathogens and/or vaccines. Teachers have a great expertise in the field of teaching at the Institute Pasteur, Universities and international lectures. The course will be held at the
